St Eustatius Marine Park was established in 1996 with the objective of conserving and managing the marine resources for the people and future generations. The park surrounds the entire island and extends from the high water mark to a depth of 30 meters (100 ft). Within the Marine Park there are 2 reserves where anchoring and fishing is not permitted.
Marine Life
There are three main types of coral reefs within the Marine Park, reefs that have developed on the remains of the extinct volcano in the northern part of the park and on the dormant volcano in the southern part of the park. Reefs have also developed on lava blocks and solified lava flows shaped like fingers and to various degrees on several wrecks in the park, both historic and modern.
A wide array of tropical reef creatures resides in and around these reefs. Among these species are: Angelfish, Butterfly fish, Flying Gurnard, Moray Eels, Spotted Drums, Frogfish, Sea Horses, Octopus, Lobster, Rays, Sharks, and Turtles.
